English Edition: What's Been Going On at La Comunidad Hispana

La Comunidad Hispana in Kennett Square has been incredibly busy lately, and we wanted to share some of what they've been up to.

In December, the organization participated in Operation Warm, distributing 330 coats to more than 135 families.
The project began in summer 2012 when LCH staff began gathering information on children who needed warm coats. Operation Warm, from Exelon, donated the coats beginning at the end of December.
"This was a team effort," said Margarita Queralt Mirkil, CEO of LCH. "Exelon generously provided the coats and our staff worked hard to make sure the children will have warm coats this winter."
168 of the coats were for girls, and 162 were for boys.

The organization also honored one of their own that month: Margarita Quinones, who has committed herself to LCH for 40 years.
Quinones, who grew up in Florida, moved to New Jersey while her parents were looking for work.
"I lived a life of transition," she said.
Quinones added that her own experiences allow her to relate to other migrant workers in the area that have been separated from their families.
She moved to Kennett Square in 1971, after finishing high school in Philadelphia. At that time, she recalled that there was no LCH, nothing that could aid migrant workers in the area. So she decided to create an action plan.
Quinones and six other women from her church decided to address the needs of the community, one that had a strong population of hispanic migrant workers.
"We were able to rent a small room above a boxing studio," she said. "We were determined to make it work. Five months later we became incorporated." And this was the beginning of La Comunidad Hispana.
"People say, 'Why don't you retire?' But I don't want to do anything else. I love helping people."
La Comunidad Hispana was established in 1973, as a community-based nonprofit organization that aims to empower immigrants and low-income residents in Chester County to stay healthy, build strong families, and lead productive, fulfilling lives.
"These are hard times, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to work at La Comunidad."
